KasKids launched at prestigious girls school When, after months of wooing, the social services coordinator from MLC asked KasCare to present at their social services assembly, we were thrilled. MLC is one of Australia’s leading private girls’ schools. But, as the person presenting, I was a little less than thrilled to learn that it would be to an audience of 600 sixteen to eighteen year olds. But I need not have worried. We were introduced to the assembly by the social services prefect – a girl with the responsibility for coordinating the assembly and many other social services activities throughout the year. Casi opened by saying ‘by virtue of being born a girl in 1992, I personally received the housing, education and welfare that three billion people around the world have not.’ She added that she saw the opportunities she had been given, not just as rights, but as responsibilities, urging the attendees to listen to what the three charities (KasCare included) had to say about how they worked to make a difference in the lives of others. Casi created fertile ground for the KasKids message – that students have the power to change the orphans’ world, one square at a time. She showed that all it takes is a moment to reflect on how lucky we are, before reaching out to help becomes a joyous responsibility. I had some pretty big shoes to fill. Luckily, the KasCare community’s efforts over the past year and a half told a compelling story of people doing just that, reaching out to help. I was proud that we could offer ourselves up as examples of Casi’s moving introduction. |
